Brilliant Barnstaple, Bideford and North Devon
During the Covid-19 lockdown we wanted to remind ourselves of everything we love about North Devon and all that awaits us there in the future. We look forward to seeing you as soon as it’s safe to do so…
There’s something really rather special about North Devon. With the bustling market towns of Bideford and Barnstaple at its heart, spectacular beaches, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, excellent transport links and a diverse range of sports and leisure activities on offer, this gem of a place proves you really can have it all. In fact, we simply can’t get enough of it.
Our beautiful Berryfields development is positioned in Roundswell, on the edge of Barnstaple and the doorstep to all this area has to offer. Close to open country, it’s also within walking distance of local shops and a supermarket, while the town centre is a short 10-minute drive away. What makes this location so fantastic is the easy access it provides to local amenities, the coast and the countryside, helping you to get that work life balance just right.
As the largest town in North Devon, what we particularly love about Barnstaple is that it gives you the best of everything. Steeped in history, this thriving market town has some fascinating stories to tell from its days as a port in the late 16th century, when it exported wool and its famous pottery. To this day, the Victorian Pannier Market is a haven for local produce, arts and crafts, while much delicious food is to be found in the independent artisan shops which line the historic Butcher’s Row. An excellent range of High Street names combine with small local shops, while there are café, bars and restaurants to suit the most discerning of palates.
Across the water and alongside the River Torridge sits the lively market town of Bideford, a 15-minute drive away. This equally charming place has a long history as a seafaring centre and is also home to The Salterns, a former Cavanna Homes development which enjoys an enviable position on the edge of town.
The Salterns was completed in 2013 and captured the hearts of many buyers with its combination of beautiful views across the River Torridge, clever designs making the most of the location, and practical features for modern living. The development has countryside to one side and within easy reach of local attractions such as the Tarka Trail and the many stunning North Devon beaches.
Perhaps one of Bideford’s most famous monuments is the 14th century Long Bridge which features no less than 24 arches of different shapes and sizes. It’s easy to lose yourself with a wander around the many shops here, which are a combination of well-known names along with bespoke independents. Not far away is the delightful fishing village of Appledore with its winding narrow streets and colourful houses, as well as many regular boat trips for those who can’t resist taking to the water.
A little further on you’ll also discover Westward Ho! With its 2 mile sandy beach and famous Pebble Ridge, this popular seaside resort makes for a perfect day out. If you’re looking to explore a little further, beautiful North Cornwall is just a short drive away too.
Let’s be honest, when it comes to leisure time the beaches are the real magnet here and of course, the surfing! Within 20 minutes of hopping in the car at Berryfields, you’ll be strolling along the golden sands of Woolacombe, Croyde and Saunton, among many others.
These glorious beaches draw thousands of adventurers each year, who are keen to catch that perfect wave at some of the best surfing beaches in the country. Whether you’re an expert or a novice, it doesn’t really matter here as everyone’s so relaxed you’ll be welcomed with open arms regardless.
It’s not all about the beaches though. If it’s rolling countryside you’re after then you’ll be spoilt for choice. Just 10 miles from Berryfields you’ll find Exmoor National Park, an area renowned for its breathtaking views and offering a chance to escape your busy lives for a moment to get back to nature. The North Devon Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is another of our favourites, containing a diverse range of scenery, landscapes and
wildlife. For those who love a good hike, the South West Coast Path is the perfect way to soak up your surroundings, taking in rugged cliffs and incredible views out to sea along the way. For cycling fans, the Tarka Trail, which passes through Barnstaple, is the place to be. As one of the country’s longest and continuous traffic-free walking and cycling paths, it’s perfect for all the family.
For the younger members of the family, there are several excellent state-funded and independent primary schools serving Barnstaple and Bideford, along with a number of secondary schools. Petroc College in Barnstaple also offers many further and higher education opportunities for students of all ages.
While North Devon gives a wonderful sense of ‘getting away from it all’, if you’re on the move and need connections further afield, you are also very well catered for. Barnstaple has its own railway station close to the centre, where you can catch a train to Exeter and join inner-city services which will get you to Bristol and London within a few hours. Exeter also boasts an international airport and is little over an hour away by car.
It goes without saying we think North Devon is a fantastic place to live and work. With as much action or relaxation as you desire on your doorstep, it won’t take long to immerse yourself in the wonderful pace of life that makes the area so popular. What are you waiting for?
