Celebrating our Women in Construction

To mark Women in Construction Week, we’re celebrating all the brilliant roles and opportunities available to women working in the homebuilding industry, from the building site to the boardroom.

According to Go Construct, women make up around 14 percent of construction industry professionals with this number set to rise with more females considering a career in construction and homebuilding.

We’re proud to offer a variety of roles and training programmes to females at all stages of their careers both on-site and in head office positions, which all play a vital role in the homebuilding process. Whether it’s working in our land, design, or technical teams, being customer-facing in sales or customer services, or building our homes on-site as a skilled labourer, site manager or engineer, we have roles available to suit all interests.

Rebecca Carruthers, who joined in 2020 as a Site Operative working on projects from foundation to completion, was promoted to Trainee Assistant Site Manager in 2021 and is now undertaking her NHBC Level 4 Management course to become an Assistant Site Manager.

“I always knew I wanted a practical and hands-on job, so after a career change from childcare to dry lining, I applied for a job with Cavanna Homes and haven’t looked back since.

“The team has been really supportive of my transition to Trainee Assistant Site Manager and providing different tasks for me to do to grow my skills and confidence. Being on a live site and seeing a scheme evolve and come together is fantastic, and a great place for women to be. I want to encourage more females to consider a career in construction – as long as you don’t mind getting your hands dirty!”, said Rebecca.

In her role as Development Manager, Karen Croker works alongside the Land and Design Team to progress sites through the planning process to consent, and negotiates with local authorities and public stakeholders to successfully deliver developments on time and budget.

Karen said: “There are so many elements to this role, it offers real variety and provides a great opportunity to see a development through from the very first stages all the way to fruition, as well as working alongside different teams across the firm. Being part of the Development Team isn’t traditionally what you would think of when it comes to working in homebuilding, but it’s incredibly rewarding”.

Janine Dixon, Sales Advisor for Oak Mount in Hemyock added: “As a Sales Advisor, you’re the first person to meet prospective buyers and show them around the homes available or put on your wellie boots to explore the development with them. You support the customer from finding their perfect home, to guiding them through the buying process and handing over the keys on completion.

“You learn so much about housebuilding along the way, working with the in-house and site teams – it’s a brilliant position to thrive in”.

Victoria Potter, Head of HR explains: “We’re passionate about supporting women to get into the construction sector and explore their potential through equal opportunities and our range of training programmes.

“We have a variety of roles available for talented individuals to join our award-winning team across the Westcountry, whether you’re starting your career or looking for a challenging new opportunity to expand your knowledge and experience, get in touch today”.
