About Berryfields and the local area of Barnstaple

North Devon’s Premier Town

Barnstaple is the largest town in North Devon and owes its origins to being an important crossing on the River Taw estuary. Before its tide-filled harbour started to silt up in the 17^th century it was a key port for the trade in wool and yarn and its mercantile past its reflected in the varied architecture and history still found in the town, from the Almshouses to the remains of Barnstaple Castle.

Barnstaple is a vibrant town offering its residents and visitors an eclectic mix of excellent independent shops, restaurants and cafes as well as many familiar high-street brands.

At its centre, Barnstaple hosts a splendid and busy Victorian- built Pannier Market and Butchers Row where wonderful local produce is available. There are numerous entertainment facilities which include a theatre and a 4-screen cinema.

Sports and recreation is well provided for with Tews Lane Community Sports Facility within easy walking distance of Berryfields, a number of sports clubs, golf clubs and many other opportunities to be active.

There are several primary schools serving the Roundswell area of Barnstaple and the town also has two secondary schools. Petroc College provides further and higher education opportunities and is also very close to Berryfields.

Barnstaple is located close to North Devon’s Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and boasts enviable access to a renowned coastline and glorious rolling countryside. Exmoor and Dartmoor are easy to reach as are award-winning beaches to surf from or simply relax on. The area offers many dedicated pathways for both walkers and cyclists, such as the Tarka Trail and the South West Coastal Path.

Berryfields is well-placed if you need connections further afield. With Barnstaple station close at hand you can catch a train, be in Exeter in just over an hour and connect with inner-city services to Bristol and London. Exeter and its International Airport are a little over an hour away by car.
