The Jewel of the South Hams
With its pretty jumble of houses, narrow winding streets and idyllic location, nestled on the creek of the historic river Dart, Stoke Gabriel is a veritable gem. This quintessentially English village, with boats bobbing on the river, children catching crabs on the mill pond, 800 year old yew tree in the churchyard reminiscent of the village’s ancient roots and glorious orchard to wander through, is what bucolic bliss is all about.
But this is no sleepy little enclave, as village life here is busy with plenty going on both on your doorstep and beyond. There’s a football club, a cricket club, a boating association and a primary school, alongside all expected village amenities. If you prefer to let others do the hard work, whether by car, motor, sail, kayak or paddleboard, then you can sit back and drink in the atmosphere or wander along the riverbank and enjoy the wonderful birdlife.
The laid-back charm of Totnes is just a 10-minute drive away with its quirky markets and shops, as well as a big supermarket. Similarly the bustling seaside town of Paignton is close and has plenty on offer for families with beach attractions, a zoo, a cinema and also larger shops. Further along the creek there area number of charming little villages to explore, such as at Tuckenhay and Dittisham or visit Agatha Christie’s house at Greenway. At the mouth of the creek is the boating haven that is Dartmouth which has lots of art galleries, boutique shops and eateries. Close by is the Sharpham estate where you can sample fantastic local cheeses and wines.
South Devon is famous for its award-winning beaches and offers great coastal walks too and some of the very best are easily accessed from Stoke Gabriel. Or for something more wild and woolly, head inland for the bleak beauty of the Dartmoor National Park just half an hour away.
Stoke Gabriel is well positioned for those who need connections further afield. Totnes train station has local and intercity services with direct links to London Paddington everyday. Exeter International Airport is just 30 miles away and the A38 and M5 are only a short drive. Both Exeter and Plymouth offer the types of entertainment, shopping, business and employment opportunities you would expect from major cities.
